Bruchko reading

Joanna Andrusko
This book reminded me of the Christopher McCandless story. A young man who has a call for something anti-western, something his friends and family don't understand. I wonder what would have happened if Chris had made it back from Alaska. Would he have been unable to re-assimilate into contemporary society after his experiences in the wild? Or would he have been able to readjust to a modern culture? I find both of their stories so fascinating. Two young men both inexplicably drawn out of their comfort zone. What called Bruce to go spread the gospel down in South America? What called him to stick with it? Why was it after all the disease and injury he suffered he still wanted to return? What is it about the primal that can win us over? Why with all the technology and modern comforts are some of us still drawn away? And why do so few of us have the courage to act on that attraction? Why were people so dubious of Chris's and Bruce's quests? Why do people who consider themselves Christians often doubt the motives of missionaries? What is it about youth that allows us to act on our primal actions so much easier than in our elder years? Why do so few of us seize the window when it is there? I adored this book. I adored this class, the exploration of the unknown, the appreciation of that which we are unfamiliar. I would love to continue discovering the unseen force that pulls so many of us back to the foreign and dark origins from which we came.
