Kelsey Steven - Avatar

I think the film Avatar is a good example of a primal religion that doesn't have any type of written culture. The Na'vi live with nature, interacting with it and not exploiting it like the humans in the film want to do. Just like we have talked about in class, primal peoples did not see nature as something to revered or simply enjoyed, but as their land that they need to respect. An example of this is how they hunt. They still need to eat and they do utilize the animals that nature provides them, but not without praising nature for providing it. When they strike and kill the animal they pray for the animal and to Eywa (their Creator) take the animal into the place where all souls go -- the Tree of Souls. There is no written text in the tribe, all their rituals are oral. Their rituals use natural energy to keep peace and harmony with the land.
