Blog #7 --Time/Calendar -- Jessica Moore
For my reading from the Walter Ong book, I had the section that talked about the onset of literacy. One of the points that stuck out the most to me was the piece about time and calendar year. How most people didn't even know what year they were born, and they were OK with it. The date and time was rarely, if ever, recorded on written documents. They claimed this was because it would force them to declare and starting point or reference point, like the crucifixion, creation of the world, or the birth of Christ. I feel like this part of not knowing the date or recording it, makes documents less reliable. There is no way to tell when certain documents were written or how long they are supposed to last for. It just seems like an unreliable way to record important documents. But I guess since it was the beginning of literacy, it wasn't that big of a deal to them.
